ARK Trout in School is celebrating running for 10 years, over the years the project has engaged thousands of children throughout the Kennet catchment with their local river, helping them understand where their water comes from and that water is a precious resource. By looking after tiny brown trout the classes gain an understanding that often the wildlife that live in the Kennet are highly sensitive and have very specific requirements. They will only thrive in a healthy river environment. They need a plentiful supply of clean, cool, well oxygenated water with well vegetated riverbanks. Over the duration of the project ARK revisit the schools and run fun, hands on sessions teaching the brown trout life cycle and trout anatomy. A very popular session is the freshwater invertebrates session, when the class learns about the creatures that make up a trout's natural diet, we take live examples into the classroom allowing the students to develop identification skills. They are then able to identify good water quality indicator species and their abundance.
Throughout the project there is a strong link to developing everyone's knowledge about chalk streams and how if we are all more water efficient there is more water left for the native wildlife (including trout) to thrive.
The release is the chance to get everyone into the river, to experience fun in a chalk stream and say goodbye to their trout.
This year we've got Water Matters passports for all the children taking part, whiuch are full of interesting information and come with stickers to show what has been spotted over the project, particularly at the release days.

Calling all #LitterHeroes... we're joining in with the Great British Spring Clean over three days from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th March to tackle some of the litter that blights our streets and open spaces. Each day we'll meet at 10.30am and spend a couple of hours focusing on specific parts of the town. If you're fed up with seeing other people's litter we'd love you to join us - together we can make a difference to our local environment. We'll provide the equipment so all you need to do is dress appropriately and provide a helping hand. Do let us know if you're planning to be there to help us get an idea of numbers, but of course you can just turn up on the day too. Town Councillors and volunteers from Marlborough in Bloom and ARK are already signed up - let's get together to clean up this country and make Marlborough marvellous!

In conjunction with Marlborough History Society our Mayor, Cllr. Mervyn Hall, is hosting a fascinating lecture "The Awkward Place of WW1 in German History" by Michael Hart CBE in the Town Hall on Friday, 16th March.
Entry is free, there will be a fairtrade wine bar and a retiring collection in support of the Mayor's charities: Home Start Kennet and Julia's House. Read more...
On Monday, 12th March 2018 and in common with many towns, cities and organisations up and down the country and around the world, Marlborough took part in flying a flag to mark Commonwealth Day. Councillors gathered on the Town Hall steps and the Town Mayor read the Commonwealth Affirmation. This year's theme is 'Towards a Common Future’. Building upon the 2017 theme of 'A Peace-Building Commonwealth', it explores how the Commonwealth can address global challenges and work to create a better future for all citizens through sub-themes of sustainability, safety, prosperity and fairness, in line with the theme of the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London. With the recent disruption to traffic and with more work on our roads to come, you’ll find it helpful to have a look at the full picture from the Streetworks Team at Wiltshire Council (click here). There’s also an explanation about just why things became so congested during the past few weeks. This should help you plan ahead and look forward to a smoother ride once planned works are completed. You can also keep up to date with current and future roadworks right across the county using Wiltshire Council’s interactive map. What makes Marlborough’s community, people and heritage unique and special enough to be celebrated with some public art? A TV company is asking small towns and villages to let them know why their community and place is so special. The communities with the best cases will be put forward to work with established artists towards a piece of art. Surely, Marlborough should be in the running for this. There’s plenty to celebrate both past and present. Great place to live, amazing history, fabulous independent shops, Jazz and Literature festivals, Open Studios, many voluntary and community groups. You’ll be able to think of more. Details in the picture – contact bigthings@banijayuk.com to share your ideas.

Marlborough Town Council and Drove Veterinary Hospital have joined forces in a campaign to urge people to clear up after their dogs. This is a problem that affects all of our towns and villages and staff at Drove Vets have designed a great, eye catching poster to encourage dog walkers to lead the way in tidying up pavements and open spaces in Marlborough.
