Reed Bed Work at Stonebridge Meadow

Stonebridge Wetlands 1Work starts w/c 23rd March to create a new wetland and pond at Stonebridge Meadow.  This will feature a bed of marshy reeds with a boardwalk running over them and a pond.  As well as creating an interesting place for people to visit, the reed bed will naturally clean water that runs off surrounding roads before it reaches the river.

Volunteers are welcome to help with planting.  Please read the full press release for all the details.

Neighbourhood Planning

Neighbourhood-Planning-300x175The Town Council is continuing its work to scope out a Neighbourhood Plan for Marlborough.  This process provides a statutory right for local people to influence development and growth in their area.  Within parameters, they are able to choose where they want new homes, shops and offices to be built, have their say on what those new buildings should look like and what infrastructure should be provided.  This process is a long one involving plenty of consultation but, once a plan is published, it becomes part of the planning system for helping to determine planning applications.

Town Councillors have met with representatives from the Malmesbury Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group who have worked through the process and now have a Plan in place - the first in Wiltshire.  This was a really useful meeting and will help to provide a template to take our own Plan forward.  The next step will be to draw together representatives to join a Steering Group.  If you would like to be a part of this group, please contact the Town Clerk at the Town Council Offices.

Marlborough - Benchmarking Report

1-012 Marlborough. Market. ChrisLock

The Town Council recently commissioned a benchmarking exercise for Marlborough with People & Places.  This positive report highlights low vacancy rates of retail outlets, high footfall and high customer spend.  There’s room for improvement on car parking, a lack of affordable shops and high business rates and property rental values. pdf Read more 1.04 MB  (photo: Chris Lock, VisitWiltshire)

Town Council Takes on Freehold of Cooper's Meadow

At the Area Board meeting on Tuesday, 27th January, Unitary Councillors voted through their agreement that Marlborough Town Council takes over the freehold of Cooper’s Meadow close to the centre of town.  This has been possible because of the Community Asset Transfer scheme run by Wiltshire Council.  This will enable the Town Council to work more closely with local community groups free from restrictions set out under its previous lease.  It has already been agreed that grazing, clearly popular with many local people, can go ahead in the spring.

Our Town Mayor, Cllr Marian Hannaford  said: “I am delighted that Wiltshire Council has agreed that the Town Council can take on this land for the town and we are looking forward to working alongside  our community groups to make sure that Cooper’s Meadow remains a fabulous asset and amenity for Marlborough.  We have a draft Management Plan drawn together by our Grounds and Estates Manager and will soon be setting up meetings to learn about how our residents would like to see this land used.”
