On Friday 20 November 2020 we should have been enjoying the town's annual Christmas market and switch-on event with all the usual street entertainment.
The national restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 put paid to our plans but that didn't stop our wonderful collaborators who were determined to bring some Christmas sparkle to a difficult year.
On Wednesday with a lot of help from T H White an 8m tree arrived and was put in place at The Green. We shared the moment live on Facebook - click Christmas tree to watch it (you don't need a Facebook account to see it). Many thanks to Charles and all involved at T H White who helped our grounds team get the biggest tree yet in place ready for the lights switch-on.
Friday turned out to be a cold, drizzly day. Instead of coming together in the High Street, we were able to stay warm and cosy at home to watch an online version of the usual event - again shown on our Facebook feed together with a live broadcast of the moment the lights went on. You can watch them all by clicking the links below:
The final touch came on Monday, 23 November with the Rotary Club's Christmas tree going up in the High Street. So as soon as national restrictions allow there's now a festive feel through the town for Christmas shoppers and our fabulous businesses will be ready to welcome you.
A round of applause to everyone who gave up their time and had some fun putting together our online Christmas Event: our Mayor, Cheryl Heuston and the wonderful Marlborough Academy of Dance & Drama performers, Father Christmas, Luke Jackson, Gerry Hooper and all at Marlborough and District Rotary Club.
Also a big thank you to Charles S. Winchcombe & Son Independent Family Funeral Directors, Henry George, Marlborough Chiropractic Clinic, Pino's, SLCA of Marlborough and Matts 1 and 2 (the Christmas crew) at Wheelers of Westbury for lighting up the town.
