VE 75 At Home Gallery

{Play}

 The COVID 19 Pandemic of 2020 prevented us from hosting public events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, 8 May 1945.  So we asked you to come together and share your memories, photos and commemorations with us so we could be together, apart, at home.  Event details here.

 The BlueBelles - We'll Meet Again

Shelly Richman, one of the BlueBelles, shared this video The BlueBelles put together (whilst all staying safe at home) as part of their VE Day celebrations. The group had planned to sing at a few events on Friday and of course would have preferred to sing this to you all in person, but they hope you enjoy their virtual choir. The BlueBelles hope to be singing for you again...we’ll meet again!

UNCLE BILL

Mike Booth's poem in tribute to his late Uncle Bill: Chief Petty Officer William Dibling. RN. DSM. Special OPs

IMG-20200508-WA0003

Chief Petty Officer William Dibling RN. DSM. Special Ops served on HMS Trumpeter a modified flat top aircraft carrier. Special operations meant it had bow doors under the waterline to let out the 'Chariots' with magnetic warheads. Ordered to set the fuses for four minutes they would set it for one and a half to get away from small arms fire from German sailors on deck. Because of this, they would often ride the explosion shockwave over the torpedo nets they had come through and be deaf for 24 hours!! Late in the war he trained up 36 American sailors on SS Fletcher for an operation in the far East. Incredibly and sadly he was the only survivor. Bill lived in Swindon after the war and was a Manager at Rover pressed steel until he retired. He passed away peacefully in 2005.

Mary2174x290-equal

Mary Ratcliffe was a Wren based with the Codebreakers at Bletchley Park in WW2, and she came in to see us 5 years ago on the 70th anniversary of VE Day.  She wanted to share her memories of celebrating VE day in London. She met a young man that day who became an important part of her life... read her story and her poem.
