VJ Day

{Play}Marlborough joins national commemorations

While VE Day (Victory in Europe) marked the end of the war in Europe in May 1945, many thousands of Armed Forces personnel were still engaged in fighting in the Far East.  Victory over Japan would come at a heavy price, and Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) marks the day Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945, which ended the Second World War.  Read more

Today, to commemorate 80 years since VJ Day, Marlborough joined the nation to pay its respects.

At 9am the Town Crier announced the day by giving a cry from the Town Hall steps.

St Mary’s Church opened for prayers and reflection from 11am and then at midday members of the Council and the Royal British Legion gathered on the Town Hall steps, with people pausing in the High Street to join the national two minute silence.

The Union flag has been flying on the Town Hall since Monday 11 August and will remain there for the whole week, and the building will be illuminated in white light on the evening of 15 August in line with other government buildings.
