Wildfire safety precautions
In the past couple of weeks our staff and ARK volunteers have dealt with fires (or their aftermath) in the town's open spaces.
Wildfire Safety & Drought Precautions
During prolonged periods of hot and dry weather, the risk of wildfires increases significantly. Vegetation, grass, and woodland become tinder-dry, meaning a single stray spark can cause a dangerous, fast-moving fire.
We ask all residents and visitors to help protect our local community, parks and open spaces, countryside and emergency services by following these safety guidelines.
How to Prevent Fires Outdoors
- Barbecues & Open Fires
- Do not use barbecues or fires (including disposable ones) in our parks and open spaces or in the countryside. Opt for a picnic instead.
- If barbecuing at home, keep it on level ground, well away from sheds, fences, trees, and dry grass. Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby.
- Never barbecue on balconies.
- Smoking Materials
- Ensure all cigarettes are completely extinguished before disposal.
- Never drop cigarette ends on the ground or throw them out of vehicle windows.
- Litter & Glass
- Take all litter home or dispose of it in secure bins.
- Do not leave glass bottles lying around—direct sunlight shining through glass can magnify heat and start a fire.
- Around the Garden
- Clear dry leaves, brush, and dead branches away from your home and outbuildings.
- Do not light bonfires until conditions improve.
What to Do If You See a Fire
Move to Safety: Get well clear of the fire, smoke, and dry vegetation immediately. Do not attempt to tackle a wildfire yourself.
Call 999: Report it to the fire service straight away.
Give Your Location: Be as specific as possible. Using location apps like What3Words can help emergency services pinpoint the exact location.
